EVAPORATIVE HUMIDIFIER
The simplest type of humidifier is an evaporative humidifier (also known as a wick humidifier). This type of humidifier consists of just three major parts: a fan, a wick and a reservoir.
An evaporative humidifier will suck air into the unit using its internal fan. This air will then pass along a water-saturated wick filter which has absorbed water from the reservoir. Once this process has taken place and the air is moist, it will then be pushed back out into the room to circulate and give the room a better balance of humidity in the air.

ULTRASONIC HUMIDIFIERS
Ultrasonic humidifiers forgo the use of a fan in favor of an ultrasonic vibrating diaphragm. This diaphragm vibrates at an ultrasonic frequency. The water that is stored in the unit is then disrupted and broken up by the fans powerful, supersonic movements. This then creates extremely fine water droplets that leave the humidifier (usually by a tiny fan) as an invisible mist. The humid air is then pushed around the room to create a much healthier balance of humidity.

WARM MIST HUMIDIFIER
Another type of humidifier is the warm mist humidifier (also know as a vaporizer or a steam humidifier). A warm mist humidifier is useful when you want to stay warm during cold months. They heat the water in the reservoir to boiling until it vaporizes. The heat moves the moisturized air around the room, meaning the warmth of the room is maintained and the level of moisture improved. On top of this, if you’re feeling under the weather you can add a medicated inhalant to the steam vapor in order to help reduce the impact of your cough.

Humidifiers Best For Small Homes
Aprilaire 350 – Self Contained Humidifier
Like the Aprilaire Model 360 Humidifier, the Aprilaire Model 350 Humidifier is designed for homes with radiators or baseboard heating systems, rather than homes with forced air heating. It is the most basic of the Aprilaire models, but will help you achieve comfort throughout your home provided you are living in a small to medium sized place of up to 3000 square meters, like me. This humidifier also requires water, electricity and access to a drain to run, and so will be ideally placed in a closet or laundry room.
Aprilaire 400 Humidifier from Bypass – 17 GPD with Automatic Digital Humidistat
The Aprilaire 400 is for use in a home up to 3000 square feet. It’s a powerful unit that really has no trouble reaching the whole house. Best of all, as mentioned, the model’s efficient water usage means that, unlike other humidifiers I’ve looked at, this one does not drain water. The machine stops the water flow when a cup in the unit gets filled on the bottom. Other units will keep this water flow going even when there is no need.
Aprilaire 360 – Self Contained Humidifier
Self contained humidifiers are for when your house does not have a central forced hot air heating system. The Aprilaire 360 is built with a fan inside the unit. The 360 will mount with its backside on your wall in your closet or laundry room or somewhere similar (be sure there is a drain nearby). Here it has access to electrics and drainage, and the front end can face elsewhere in your house and emit humid-controlled air around your house.

The PureGuardian® H1610 100-Hour Ultrasonic Humidifier offers both warm mist and cold mist settings, which is fantastic because it means I can use the humidifier during winter or summer. Where I live, we tend to get extremes with weather and so the air can be dry during these times of year. If you have children you might want to consider keeping this humidifier out of the way if you have it on warm mist setting, as the heat of the unit and the mist when it leaves immediately can be hot and your child could burn themselves.

From what I understand this isn’t the greatest range for a humidifier, but since this is a table top humidifier that you will most likely be using for a small room, it does not really cause a problem.
