Whether they are used in your bedroom, bathroom or basement, dehumidifiers are an essential when you are struggling with excess moisture in your home. ENERGY STAR qualified, the Keystone 50-Pint Dehumidifier has received countless positive reviews and, as we found out, for good reason. Competitively priced and easy to use, it saps the excess moisture from the air and helps curb the growth of mold effectively.

The Basics

The Keystone Dehumidifier is a 50-pint dehumidifier that removes excess moisture from a room up to 3000 square feet. This would place it in a medium sized dehumidifier category which means that it can be used to remove moisture in larger rooms and basements.

I found this unit particularly suitable for use in the basement. As I am sure many of you do, half-way through each year I find myself having to (physically) swap my winter wardrobe for more summer-appropriate weather. I store most of my clothing in the basement and have to lug it all up and down the stairs when the seasons change. The biggest problem I have with this, apart from the actual physical labor, is that my clothing can never be worn immediately. Sometimes the clothing requires quite a few washes before the musty smell comes out. However, since investing in the Keystone 50-Pint Dehumidifier, I do not have this problem anymore.

As an ENERGY STAR qualified dehumidifier, it does not emit any greenhouse gases. Even though this is very strictly regulated by the U.S environmental protection agency and the U.S Department of Energy, plenty of dehumidifiers still have this problem.

The key features of this dehumidifier include the following:

  • Electronic controls with a two-speed LED display
  • A 24 hour timer – I found the 24 hour timer to be a great feature as I could set the dehumidifier and leave the house without having to worry whether it would switch off or not.
  • Transparent water level indicator – this feature made it easy for me to see when the dehumidifier needed to be emptied.
  • Full bucket alert
  • Automatically shuts-off when the bucket is full

The Keystone 50-Pint Dehumidifier also has an auto-restart function which saves your settings in the case of a power outage. Settings include Normal, Turbo and Auto-Defrost. The auto-Defrost works perfectly in the winter months especially in places like the basement which tend to get especially damp.

In terms of cleaning this dehumidifier, I did have some problems with the removal of the water bucket as it didn’t seem to fit into the actual appliance that well. What I also found particularly strange was that the dehumidifier seems to carry on running even though the bucket is removed. Cleaning the bucket itself proved relatively easy.

The last problem that I have with the dehumidifier is that it is quite loud, and I had at some point mistaken it for my running dishwasher.

The Verdict

If you are looking for a dehumidifier for use in larger spaces, then this is a very good option despite the fact that it is quite a bit louder than some of the other dehumidifiers on the market. It is efficient and environmentally friendly.
