Humidifiers can be divided on a number of classifications but the most common one depends on the quality of air that you desire. Based on this factor you can either usually classify humidifiers into warm moist air humidifiers or cold moist air humidifiers. The choice of either kind of humidifier depends on your preference but is also governed by some generic factors. For example, warm air humidifiers are known to be less noisy when compared to their counterparts. Additionally, warm air humidifiers are economical and suitable for single rooms. On the other hand, cool air humidifiers are known to be very big and can serve a larger area. It is made of complex moving parts and characterized by some kind of noise.

Warm air humidifiers suffer from the disadvantage that prolonged use can make the air muggy. Cool air humidifiers do not suffer from this advantage but require frequent filter replacement. Cold air humidifiers are comparatively cheap when used for larger areas.

Warm air humidifiers have a heating element in them and based on this, they can be further subdivided into Steam/Vaporizer or Warm Mist. The cool air humidifiers do not require any kind of heating elements and are subdivided into Evaporation, Impeller and Ultrasonic. Many people prefer cool air humidifiers because the absence of a heating element makes it safe especially if kids are around the installation place.

Among the warm air humidifiers, the steam/vaporizer has a high safety risk and very often leads to moderate to severe burn injuries. Other than this disadvantage, the Steam/Vaporizer humidifier is the simplest one to construct and leads to a low production and maintenance cost. The Evaporation Wick humidifier is associated with large noise levels but is preferred for its simple working principle and self regulating potential. The Impeller type cold air humidifiers overcome the noise disadvantage of the Evaporation wick humidifier. The Ultrasonic are the most advanced form of humidifier and the most preferred. It employs ultrasonic waves to create mist by vibrating the water. These are highly reliable and efficient and almost totally eliminate the noise issue typically associated with cold moist air humidifier.
